This report contains a summary of observations by the Australian Human Rights Commission (the Commission) following its July 2009 visit to Australia’s immigration detention facilities on Christmas Island. It follows the Commission’s 2006, 2007 and 2008 annual reports on inspections of immigration detention facilities.[1]

The Commission received 1937 submissions during the Freedom of Religion and Belief in the 21st century project submission period (17 September 2008 to 28 February 2009). An additional 95 submissions were received after the formal deadline.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) requires Australia to protect children's rights to cultural identity, language and religion.
