Working with Muslim communities in Australia: a review of the Community
Policing Partnership Project
(25 March 2011)
The Community Policing Partnership Program supported the development of local partnerships between police and Muslim communities across Australia.
Joint community and police projects, which aimed to build trust, respect, inclusion and participation, were eligible to receive funding of up to $10,000.
The Community Policing Partnership Program aimed to address issues raised by Muslim communities in previous Australian Human Rights Commission projects, including the Ismaع report and Unlocking Doors.
Some concerns raised were a fear of victimisation if incidents of discrimination were reported and a general lack of trust in law enforcement agencies.
The Community Policing Partnership Program aimed to respond to these issues by:
- improving trust and understanding between Muslim communities, police and support services
- promoting awareness of human rights and avenues for complaint
- increase awareness of the diversity of Muslim communities and the issues that are important to them among police officers
- identifying good practice in policing at the local level to enhance community policing activities, and help respond to complaints relating discrimination and abuse.
The Commission worked with police services and the Australian Multicultural Foundation, which has extensive experience working with both Australian police services and multicultural communities, to deliver this program. For more information:
