Public Hearing in Sydney, Tuesday, 9 September 2014

 The fifth public hearing of the inquiry was held at the Australian Human Rights Commission on Tuesday, 9th September.

The witness for this hearing was the Hon Chris Bowen MP, who was the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship from September 2010 until February 2013.

Public hearing in Canberra, Friday, 22 August 2014

The fourth public hearing of the inquiry was held in Canberra at Parliament House on Friday, 22nd August.

The witnesses for this hearing were: The Hon Scott Morrison MP, Minister for Immigration and Border Protection; Mr Paris Aristotle and Professor Nicholas Procter, Chair and Member of the Minister's Council on Asylum Seekers and Detention respectively; and Ms Deborah Homewood, Managing Director of MAXimus Solutions, responsible for providing support to unaccompanied children in immigration detention.

Public hearing in Sydney, Thursday, 31 July 2014

The third public hearing of the inquiry was held in Sydney on 31 July 2014. At that hearing a number of witnesses were compelled to attend and answer questions under section 21(5) of the Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986 (Cth). Witnesses included medical and child welfare professionals who worked with children and families in detention, including on Nauru, and senior representatives of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

Public hearing in Melbourne, Wednesday, 2 July 2014

The second public hearing of the inquiry was held in Melbourne at the Fitzroy Town Hall on Wednesday, 2nd July 2014. Expert witnesses gave evidence about the impacts of immigration detention on the health, well-being and development of children. These witnesses included pediatricians, psychiatrists, representatives from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, and representatives from IHMS who provide health services to all of Australia’s immigration detention facilities.

Public hearing in Sydney, Friday, 4 April 2014

The first of the public hearings of the National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention 2014 was held in Sydney on Friday 4 April 2014. At that hearing the inquiry heard from selected individuals who had been invited to appear, including doctors, psychiatrists, educators, representatives from key NGOs, and people who had been in immigration detention in Australia as children.
