Young People’s Human Rights Medal (sponsored by King & Wood Mallesons)
The Young People’s Human Rights Medal is awarded to an individual who is under the age of 25 years (on 30 September 2014) and who has made an outstanding contribution to advancing human rights in Australia.
The finalists for 2014 are:
James Clarke for raising awareness of the rights of young LGBTI people in both the Indigenous and broader WA school communities by bravely sharing his personal story and encouraging others to speak out.
Students of Woodville High School for bringing national attention to the issue of children and young people in detention by coordinating rallies, working with local politicians, and campaigning via social media.
Daniel Haile-Michael and Maki Issa for challenging racism and racial profiling as the lead applicants in a historic Federal Court case involving the Victorian police force.
Nathan Basha for his tireless commitment to improving the life experience of people with disability, particularly promoting equal opportunity in employment.
