From: Crusader Hillis Sent: Wednesday, 25 November 2009 12:13 PM To: disabdis Subject: Against the application requesting exemption from the DDA 1992 ACT for Village, Greater Union, Hoyts and Reading Cinemas. The recent application made by Village Roadshow, Greater Union, Hoyts and Reading Cinemas requesting exemption from the Disability Discrimination Act for a period of two and a half years will set the rights of Deaf and hard-of-hearing cinema goers back by years. It is appalling to see large corporations with significant technological and financial resources at their disposal trying to avoid their civic and legal responsibilities in this manner. Deaf and disabled audiences already suffer inordinate obstacles to enjoying arts and entertainment. Cinema presentation is something which is highly amenable for captioning and does not significantly impact on other audiences’ enjoyment of the film. It is ridiculous to think that as few as 105 screenings out of an estimated 40,000 screenings nationally will be captioned for this audience. I strongly oppose the application by these cinemas.
