Subject: Reject the application for exemption by Big 4 cinema chains! To whom it may concern, I am most unhappy with the application submitted by Hoyts, Village, Greater Union and Reading Cinemas for temporary exemption from complaints in relation to captioning and audio description. I dont understand why they would send in an application when the cinema captioning situation is so bad that it should be considered a clear case of discrimination. First of all, WHY was the system not even designed to suceed but set it up for a failure when it is only 3 cinemas and in the areas (Jam Factory and Nova) are very difficult to get to - restricted parking, traffic that doesnt allow us living far away to get there in time to watch a movie with captions. The current proposal is not sufficient - why do in phases?! It is not like a shopping centre construction - this is just retrofit in different cinemas so set it up all simultaneously and make a grand announcement that all cinemas in proposal are now accessible and do AT least more than 3 sessions a week!! 3 sessions is not enough! And one movie 3 sessions a week is very restrictive. Reject the Big 4 cinemas application for exemption and do A LITTLE bit (we are not asking too much) more than the current proposal. e.g. we ask for more than 3 sessions a week (i.e. for those who are working like myself, for those with children, etc), we ask for all cinemas in proposal to be made accessible at once - not in phases, we ask for cinemas providing captions to be made available in areas where the carparking is not so restricted and in suburbs - Northland, Eastland, Southland, etc. That would be a great start. And most importantly, dont give us old movies! Give us blockbusters at same time as hearing people get them. Not months or even past the DVD releast date! Thank you for listening!
